SETIU (March 9): The Terengganu government is making use of the tourism ‘lull’ amid the Covid-19 outbreak, to carry out infrastructure upgrades at state tourist locations.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the lower number of tourists arrivals, especially at beaches and other holiday spots, would allow repair and beautification work to be carried out for the comfort of visitors.

“In addition, we can also (use the time to) produce educational and promotional materials for tourists when they come to Terengganu later,” he told reporters after officiating the Setiu Wetlands open day here, today.

Also present were CIMB Islamic Bank chief executive officer (CEO) Ahmad Shariman Mohd Shariff and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia CEO Lim Chooi Kuan.

Various activities were held in conjunction with the event including mangrove planting, gotong-royong cleaning of the wetlands, as well as briefings on the importance of environmental conservation.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shariman said CIMB Islamic Bank had also allocated RM1 million a year for a three-year period from 2020 to manage and implement sustainable green initiatives at the Setiu Wetlands.

“These initiatives can provide long-term benefits to the conservation process in the area,” he added.
